Skill Building Program

The skill building program is a hugely important part of Farmhouse Rescue. We work with two different organizations in Orange County, Achievements Beyond Limited Expectations (ABLE) and Vocational Visions. They are an invaluable source in helping us to connect with adults with developmental disabilities who could benefit from spending time at the farm. Both amazing organizations share our vision and have a passion for helping others.

For the program, the participants are usually expected to come to the farm once a week. They will be able to develop existing talents, learn various new skills, foster a sense of independence, and improve their fine motor skills. These are all so important in enhancing their lives, feeling a sense of achievement, and understanding their worth within their own community.

Being in a social environment and meeting new people who will treat them kindly and with respect is beneficial in preparing individuals for different social settings. All our workers at the farm will welcome, support, and guide them to ensure they feel included, safe, and valued. As well as all that has been mentioned previously, it should be noted that just being around the animals is valuable therapy in itself, and an important factor as to why this program is so successful. Animals are so healing and have a strong sense of the emotions of the people around them. Our participants enjoy being around the animals and look forward to their time spent on the farm.

We can then help by giving ongoing support and creating pathways to employment by connecting them to agricultural jobs locally to gain paid employment if that is what they are seeking.

We are so lucky to be able to witness, over a short period of time, how these adults grow in confidence and really start to believe that they are capable of so much more. They feel like a valuable part of the community which is critical for self-esteem and helps to motivate them to continue the path of life-long learning.

The skill building program empowers adults with disabilities to speak up for what they want and supports them in trying to fulfill those needs and desires.
