We all know that goats are curious and playful animals, but have you ever noticed how much goats love climbing and wondered why they do that? Here is a little story about why climbing is a natural instinct for them.
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a tribe of goats. These goats lived in a hilly region, with plenty of cliffs and rocky slopes for them to climb and explore. The goats were naturally curious creatures, and they loved nothing more than to clamber up to the highest peaks and look out over the landscape to get a better view of their surroundings and familiarize themselves with their environment.
They were agile and sure footed, with sharp hooves that allowed them to grip onto even the slipperiest of surfaces. But the goats didn’t just climb for the fun of it. No, they had a very practical reason for their love of heights. You see, in this hilly region, the grass was often scarce, and the goats had to work hard to find enough food to sustain themselves.
By climbing to the top of the cliffs, the goats were able to spot patches of grass and other plants that might not be visible from lower down. This helped them to find food when times were tough and kept them from going hungry. And so, the goats continued to climb, generation after generation, always searching for new heights to conquer and new grass to feast on.
Our goats don’t need to search out for food, but they continue to climb even when food is abundant, it is a natural inherent behavior for them. Climbing helps them to maintain their balance and agility skills. It also helps to keep them mentally stimulated and give them a sense of accomplishment. So, you will always see various climbing structures in the goat enclosure at FarmHouse Rescue because we want to ensure that our goats are happy goats.
