Animal therapy, also sometimes known as pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy, is a type of therapy that involves animals as a form of treatment for various mental health conditions. It is based on the idea that interacting with animals can have a positive impact on a person’s emotional and physical well-being. There is evidence to suggest that animal therapy can be effective in reducing anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as improving social skills and self-esteem.
Most people are aware of service dogs that aid people with disabilities like sight or hearing issues as well as assisting wheelchair users that may not be able to open doors, reach particular items etc. Also, now more than ever you may see emotional support dogs too, who help ease their owner’s anxiety, depression, some phobias and loneliness, and can provide a sense of comfort and companionship. However, it is not just dogs that are able to offer help with mental health issues. Many animals have the ability to heal. Interacting and just spending time with animals can be an enjoyable and beneficial activity for people of all ages, helping to improve self-esteem and overall well-being.
Spending time on a farm can also be therapeutic in many ways. The peaceful and natural surroundings of a farm, as well as the physical activity involved in farm work, can provide a sense of calm and relaxation as well as a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Just being surrounded by animals and nature can provide a sense of connection and well-being. We see it on a daily basis as many of our volunteers have or have had mental health issues in the past and being at the farm has helped them immensely. However, it is important to consider any physical limitations or allergies before engaging in farm work. People underestimate the physically demanding nature of looking after farm animals and we have to be mindful of this when bringing in volunteers.
It is also important to note that animal therapy is not a replacement for traditional forms of therapy and may not be suitable for everyone, but it can be an effective complementary treatment for mental health issues.
